G3 GLACIATION

Over the summer holiday research 'The Younger Dryas'

This is what the examiner says:  Glacial landforms can be linked to global events that changed climate. An example of this relationship can be understood through the study of the ‘Younger Dryas’, a short lived, but substantial, temperature fluctuation at the end of the last glacial cycle. This was probably driven by a massive influx of cold fresh water into the N Atlantic due to recession of American ice and release of ice-dammed lakes, resulting in the re-growth of glaciers in upland Britain producing cirque moraines such as Cwm Idwal, Brecon Beacons.

Produce a powerpoint slideshow to present your findings next term

G4 WATER

Week 11:  To be completed by Wed February 10th lesson 4

Read through the Murray-Darling Chapter and summarise the physical influences on water supply.  Present you summary either in a chart or mind map making sure you categorise the factors into climate/relief/geology.

Week 12:  To be completed by Wed March 17th lesson 4

Complete the Thames Basin DME

Remember: You are...using the given resources to help you analyse and justify the most sustainable strategies for meeting London’s water demand.
You may present your decision presentation in anyway you like: poster/notes/powerpoint/mindmap
as long as you justify and give evidence for the decisions you make.

The two parts of the Specification you are fulfilling are:

2.3 How can water supply and demand be managed sustainably?
  • New storage capacity
  • Water transfers
  • Groundwater sources
  • Desalination
  • Recycling
  • Grey’ water
  • Reducing consumption
2.4 Can sustainable water supplies be maintained in the future?
  • Draw together above ideas to critically assess attitudes towards the sustainability of water supplies.

G4 URBAN

Week 13:  To be completed by Friday March 26th lesson 4
Create a 'theme sheet' on explaining what an 'Edge City' is.  Give an example, list the 'qualifications' for being an edge city and give a European example evaluating whether you think it actually qualifies.

4.2 Research TASK 4.2  To be completed by the beginning of next term
(all the resources you need are either in the folder or linked to websites below)
What pressures currently confront cities and how are they changing them?

1.  Compare transport problems of developed and developing cities
(i)   Look at the .mpeg videos on Bangkok, Columbia and Congestion Charge
(ii)  Watch the Bangkok3 presentation (just click on it and it opens up using a web browser)
(iii) Go through the Newcastle powerpoint
ACTIVITY:  Make a brainstorm sheet and jot down transport problems in LEDCs and MEDCs and suggest solutions to these problems based on what Bangkok, Bogata, London, Newcastle have done.  There are one or two other resources in the folder that might be useful

2.  Investigate disparities of wealth in cities
Watch the Tale of Two Cities video

Watch this video clip
Read the Slumdog Millionaire article and answer these questions:
a)  Outline four pieces of evidence of the great disparities of wealth that exist in Mumbai
b)  With reference to examples, describe and comment on the ways in which LEDCs and MEDCs have attempted to solve problems of wealth disparities within cities (think about ways in which deprived areas of cities in UK have been upgraded - see housing powerpoint)

3.  Identify extremes of population density of cities
click here for data on cities - population and densities
ACTIVITY:  Select the cities you have looked at above plus 10 other cities (to make a max of 15 cities with at least 7 LEDC cities) make a scatter graph (do it in excel for ease) and compare size of population and density - describe the trends shown, try to spot extremes.

4.  What is the extent of sprawl in developed countries?
Write a summary of the main aspects and issues re Urban sprawl in Europe click here

5.  Environmental quality varies between major cities in the world:
Compare the problems of air quality in developed and developing cities - create a brainstorm sheet to compare problems of air quality in London and Mexico (add in anything on air quality from the other cities you have looked at in this section)
London:  click for document see chapter 2 and click for webpage
Mexico City:  click for document

4.3 SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
